We will send you the address and further information about your workplace. If you need more details please do not hesitate to ask us, we will try to provide you with all the information you need.
My First day at the company
On your first day one of us will accompany you to your workplace. We will show you how to get there and introduce you to your boss. Usually there are some things to discuss between you, the company and IAESTE. After this introduction your first working day begins.
The company's hierarchy
In every company there is a hierarchy. Sometimes it is very strict and sometimes it is not so strict. It depends on the size, the company and the people. Usually the boss tells you to whom you should go in special cases. You can also ask people who are working there.
In Germany we usually address colleagues formally, that means Mrs./Miss/Mr. and the surname.
How to dress
When you arrive at the company for the first time it may not be clear which dress code is appropriate. You applied for a professional traineeship, so it's always better to be a bit too formal than too casual. Men should wear a collared shirt and dress pants. After your first day you see how people in your office are dressed and you can learn from them. Even if you don't have to wear formal clothes every day, it's good to have some for special meetings or events. If in doubt, send us an email asking about the proper dress code for the company in question.
If you have problems with the company or you have any other questions regarding any topic, please do not hesitate to contact us.
In Germany you usually receive your salary once per month. The money is either given to you by your employer directly or they transfer it to the IAESTE bank account and we give it to you. Either way you will get your salary in cash. The payday varies from company to company. Usually it is at the end of the month. Please consider this when you plan the amount of money you bring with you to Darmstadt.
Good to know
Address people by Mrs./Miss/Mr. and their surnames.
If you feel sick and you cannot go to work, call the company and explain the situation to her/him. You must go to a doctor because you need a medical attestation proving your illness. Bring the attestation to the office the next time you go there. If you are ill for several days ask the secretary whether you should mail the medical attestation or not.
